MOTS-c

MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded by mitochondrial DNA, studied as a signaling molecule linking mitochondrial function to whole-body metabolism — sometimes described in the research literature as an “exercise mimetic.”

Research focus: Research has focused on AMPK pathway activation (reported ~2-fold increase in skeletal muscle within 30 minutes in rodent models), metabolic effects in diet-induced obesity models (reduced body-weight gain, improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, enhanced skeletal muscle glucose uptake), and aging-related studies showing improved treadmill performance and grip strength in aged mice, alongside reversal of some age-associated mitochondrial gene-expression changes. Circulating MOTS-c levels have also been studied as inversely correlated with age and metabolic dysfunction in human observational data.
